What is an Ijazah?
In Quran study, an Ijazah is an authorization from a qualified teacher indicating that a learner has reached the required standard in a particular area of recitation or transmission.
Why the teacher matters
An Ijazah pathway depends on the teacher’s own qualification and the method of assessment. Learners should ask who will teach them and what authorization the teacher holds.
Understand the sanad
Sanad refers to the chain of transmission connecting a teacher to earlier teachers. Learners should receive clear information about the relevant chain when an Ijazah is offered.
Ask about assessment
A serious program should explain what the learner must demonstrate, how recitation is assessed and how much revision is expected before authorization.
Choose a program carefully
If Ijazah is your goal, discuss the pathway during a trial or consultation and make sure the teacher, curriculum and assessment expectations are clear.
